SP21 Workshop – Narrating Time: A TimelineJS Workshop

In lieu of our usual Wednesday “Lunchtime Lectures”, the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities (CTSDH) is holding a series of virtual workshops for Spring 2021 (no Potbelly Sandwiches unfortunately!). Each workshop lasts for one and a half hours and is led by a second-year MA in Digital Humanities candidate. Topics will range from digital humanities tools to creative commons publishing.

Our first workshop, led by Regina Hong, was held on February 10, 2021 and looked at TimelineJS, a tool by Northwestern University’s Knight Lab for creating interactive, media-rich timelines. After a brief introduction and walkthrough of TimelineJS, participants spent some time planning and designing the narratives for their timelines before getting into the actual building. Over the next thirty minutes, timelines on topics such as Jews in medieval England and the representation of dogs in the archives slowly came into being. After being treated to a walkthrough of each other’s timelines, participants spent the last part of the workshop reflecting on TimelineJS as a digital humanities tool and its affordances and limitations. If you are interested in further details on the contents of the workshop, you can download the handout here.
